Games Night 4th January 2018

Five of us this week.
The game of this night with the all-time highest number of votes with 4 votes was:
Betrayal At House On The Hill
By Avalon Hill with the Widow’s walk expansion.
The players were:
AL – Darren ‘Flash’ Williams
DA – Brandon Jaspers
MC – Professor Longfellow
PH – Madame Zastra
SF – Zoe Ingstrom

In the way it always is in these things, it was a dark and stormy night. Four intrepid explorers and one failed hitchhiker coincidentally found themselves atop a hill besides a mysterious yet insanely designed house. Driven by some compulsion that they didn’t even bother to attempt thinking about resisting, these five idiots illegally entered the house. Knowing that staying together was perhaps the best approach to self-preservation, everyone dashed off in different directions to different floors. Madame Zastra was able to acquire a handy everyday tool, the chainsaw, which is just the thing one wants when exploring a weird-ass house with the bathroom in the roof. Not much of anything else happened and more and more of the house’s improbable layout was discovered. Suddenly, due to something that Brandon Jaspers did, or didn’t do or was thinking when he did or didn’t do it, the HAUNTING #92 kicked in.

In a surprise twist, the betrayer this time turned out to be… no one! The shock! The horror! The contravention of the Trade Descriptions Act,,,if fact, I saw no ‘hill’ and no house is built like this…
The house was to be fully searched and a tribute given to the ghost each turn.
The criteria for the tributes were provided by the five loonies sitting round the table:
Blue
Not a weapon
Dangerous
Used in a kitchen
Can be ingested
Nothing was ever blue.
The rest of the house was dutifully searched and stuff was dutifully given to the ghost. Professor Longfellow was fortunate enough to locate the final room and finished this story by exiting the house. The other four presumably just left when they felt like it.

BAHOTH
In a dark and twisted house sat upon a dark an oppressive hill four beleaguered mortals traipsed through the dark front portal into a not so well illuminated hallway. These four unfortunate souls were the less than famous Professor Longfellow (MC), disgraced cheerleader Vivian Lopez (PH), recently distraught Zoe Ingstrom (SF) and Ox Bellows (AL), the instantly forgettable.
Unannounced, uninvited and unwanted, these four trespassers pried further into the overtly oppressive construction, not once being putt off by the fact that the first room before reaching the stairs happened to be a cemetery.
This house had recently undergone a renovation and featured new rooms to explore on a third floor in the room, which was totally ignored.
With all of seven rooms explored, Ox Bellows, managed to trip a haunting. There’s music playing…
I was working in the lab, late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my monster from his slab, began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise
Professor Longfellow did the mash.
betrayal
None of the criteria for revealing the traitor applied, so it fell to the person next to AL.
With the Graveyard being the only haunt-related room discovered, MC got to pick where the ballroom went (next to the graveyard) as well as two further haunting rooms (also next to the graveyard). Within 3 rounds, 3 extra haunting rooms were added, Ox Bellows slid down and slide and dispatched Dracula before he got a chance to party, and four monsters made it to the ballroom.
They did the mash! They did the monster mash!
Awoooooooo!

Next up, we took on new personae for
epic-spell-wars-of-the-battle-wizards-dual-at-mt-skullzfyre
MC became Krazztar the Blood o’ Mancer and despite Wil Wheaton’s Krazztar voice stuck in his head, affected a wizened ol’ Scot.
PH chose Lady Lazervere Of The Space Kingdom and had the most disturbing voice of the night…
SF switched to Princess Holiday and her Furicorn who sounded a lot like SF.
AL embodied the role of Pisster the Pissed Wizard who had about three distinct voices.
skullzfyre
The game went into four rounds:
Round 1:
SF followed by MC were killed with PH defeating AL.
Round 2:
MC followed by AL were killed with SF defeating PH.
Round 3:
PH followed by SF were killed with MC defeating AL
Round 4:
SF followed by MC well killed with PH defeating AL.
Laservere wins!

Games Night 3rd March

BAHOTH
The recent tale of tantalising terror saw murder most yucky when one member of a group of four house-breakers show their true intent with the bwa haa haa and other general other despicableness.
Professor Longfellow (played by AL), Peter Alimoto (PH) and Vivian Lopez (SC) started off exploring the ground floor while Darrin “Flash” Williams (MC) (so nicknamed due to the speed with which he scarpars after every ‘flash’) darted upstairs, found a delightful female companion and a nice big bed. The professor fell from one damaging disaster to the next before falling through the floor and ending up stuck in the basement. During the exploration, nothing of real note turned up before the haunting was activated by the hapless professor doing stuff he really should not have been.
Having explored as much of the house as they had, it was somewhat inexplicable that there had so far been no sign of the plethora of body parts and smell of overcooked meat that suddenly seemed to fill the house and nostrils (okay, there were the skeletons, but this is an old spooky house, it would be weird if there weren’t skeletons). There were only four rooms between the attic where 3 screaming victims were discovered and the, now bolted, front door. It should have been an easy task of freeing them. Unfortunately, with Vivian stuck in the basement with only magical lift that could only randomly move to anywhere… in the basement and a hoard of dirty cannibals (scenario 46) sitting in the dining room situated right next to the main hallway, things looked bleak.
Flash wasted no time and rushed downstairs to hold back the cannibals and give the victims their chance to run the gauntlet. The first altercation saw him lose the spear to thieving cannibal hands. Little Peter managed to get the door open and successfully flailed pathetically at the cannibals while Flash carried one victim to safety. With exceptional bravery, Flash darted back into danger to rescue a second victim, but not before the third victim fell to the brutal bites and spear thrusts of the cannibals. Once they were finished, there wasn’t much of anything left to rescue. Flash could have stayed outside with the victims, safe from the horrors of the house, but with little Peter and Vivian still stuck in the basement, futilely searching for non-existent stairs, he had to save them.
In he rushed, acquired a pistol and the cannibals then enjoyed feasting upon him and Peter. Vivian, running through a series of equally unhelpful rooms, including an underground lake, found herself facing-off against the evil Longfellow. Somehow, she overpowered the flesh-eating moron who became food to his posse of cannibals. Vivian dashed through a kitchen and into a dead end, appropriately the larder. It was here she met her grisly end.
Game Result: No winners. Hurrah for flesh eating cannibals, the girl who watched her companion get eaten and 2 victims who ran the wrong way and fell off a cliff.

Following this, we played a quick game of the newly-acquired
Minecraft
AL scored 16 points first. Well done.

Finally we played
cthulhu-gloom
Some effort was made to keep to the storytelling aspect of the game, but it soon just became a case of mucking it up for everyone else. 1 reshuffled deck later PH finally killed off the last of his family members leaving the final score as:
Adam -155 with 3 dead but had just stolen the story card from MC which allowed living characters to score.
PH -120 with all 4 dead
MC -75 with 2 dead, but was counting on the recently nicked aforementioned story card.
SC -20 with only one dead.
Player of the evening: AL for being a backstabbing and then eating baddie who fell foul to his own minions and then won both the following filler games.

Games Night 18th February

We played AL’s latest acquisition:
Betray At House On The Hill

Tonight let me tell you two tales pertaining to a certain house, perched upon a certain hill and in which betrayal certainly took place.
It all started when three plucky and in no way associated individuals happened to arrive at the house at the same time whilst all out for a walk. Professor Longfellow (played by MC), candle enthusiast and expert (now retired) stroked his scraggly beard as he pondered the dark portal to the house he espied whilst ruminating on tallow. He was soon joined by two others, a man who introduced himself as Darren Williams ‘but call me Flash’ (played by AL) and a creepy little girl dragging a rather unkempt teddy bear called Zoe Inngstrom (played by SC). It was inevitable that these three complete strangers would decide to enter the freaky house and explore it. Just because.
No sooner were the hapless trio inside, then Flash darted through the first door he reached and proceeded to encounter a successive melange of difficulties that left him near death. Not willing to be left alone with the creepy girl and her teddy bear, Longfellow tried another door. It was not long before he encountered a busty girl with whom he immediately hit it off with and she soon learned that he was not just Longfellow by name, but also by reputation. Together, they explored the upper floor rooms, and each other, their enjoyment only marginally being hampered by a dagger they discovered which had lodged the tendrils sprouting from the handle into Longfellow’s forearm.
Meanwhile, Zoe quickly located a hidden door, leading to a secret passageway and a loyal dog, before falling though the floor into the basement. Not long afterward she was joined down there by Flash until he somehow heard of the professor’s success at entering the vault and his discovery of a healing salve. Fortunately, there was a secret staircase that lead him almost straight to Longfellow but, following his run of luck, got entangled in a spider’s web like no other. Zoe discovered a creepy doll and suddenly the whole mood of the house changed and the haunting began. Never trust creepy little girls wandering about on their own and who play with VOODOO DOLLS (scenario 25) as a hobby. Flash felt an obstruction in his throat and found it difficult to breath. Longfellow experienced stabbing pains, but that could just be the knife, or a stich from all the exercise he was getting.
Longfellow quickly healed Flash with the salve and Flash, using his restored strength, wriggled free of the web. Using clues they began to hunt for the dolls. Almost immediately, Longfellow, by using his brainy brain, found his doll in the garden and, after tickling it a bit in a special place, reluctantly destroyed it and Zoe’s power over him. Flash suddenly choked to death in the foyer. Zoe gloated, cackling in the darkness as Longfellow left the house, candleless, but with the as-yet-unnamed girl of his dreams.

In an alternate set of dimensions 3 other plucky doomed explorers met up outside a similarly decrepit and unwholesome house upon some accursed hilly thing. This time Father Rhinehardt (AL) lead Heather Granville (SC) and Ox Bellows (MC) into the house. Some questionable cosmic shuffling, meant our hapless heroes discovered pretty much the same stuff as their pan-dimensional counterparts. Heather, fell through to a useless basement (because the stupid builders forgot to put in stairs). Ox checked out the ground floor and Father Rhinehardt moseyed on upstairs and pretty much did everything short of actually killing himself. It seemed that our touring trio only really got going before Ox’s discovery of a ring in the basement (he fell down a coal chute) caused A BREATH OF WIND (scenario 17) and revealed Heather to be in league with the resident poltergeist.
Rhinehardt and Bellows needed to get as many candles as they could from the dining room by using only the random usefulness of a magic elevator. The dim-witted Bellows, found the first candle and passed it to the brainier Father to start performing the exorcism. The good Father couldn’t roll dice to save his life, and was indeed killed by the treacherous Heather. With one candle conveniently dropped in the basement, Bellows only needed two more, but kept looking until he found four (he found that rubbing his idol a lot, his eyesight actually got better). With the demented Heather closing in, he dived down the chute again and single-handedly exorcised the extremely heavily-armed and many-armed poltergeist. He wearily searched about for some non-existent stairs and the story ends here.

The Treachery award goes to: SC who shows us all what happens when you let girls play board games.
The Worm Food award goes to: AL who managed to die horribly in both scenarios.
MC is not expecting any awards for writing this.
